The European Union is banning bisphenol A in food contact materials, with different transition periods depending on the application.
Timeline
Regulation (EU) 2024/3190, corrected by Regulation (EU) 2026/250, bans bisphenol A in food contact materials. The general rule has applied to single-use articles since 20 July 2026.
Some applications have longer transition periods, including certain coatings for canned food, until 20 January 2028. An additional twelve-month period is provided for filling. Reusable articles fall into separate categories, with deadlines of 20 July 2027 or 20 January 2029.
What this changes for suppliers
Manufacturers of metal packaging, varnishes, coatings and plastic materials must offer alternatives. Food manufacturers are reviewing their specifications: this creates an opportunity for suppliers of substitute solutions and testing laboratories.
